Calculate the tangible asset value, a financial metric that represents the total value of a company’s assets that can be used to generate revenue. Tangible assets are those physical assets that have a finite monetary value and can be sold, used, or consumed.

The formula is as follows:

\[\text{Tangible Asset Value} = \text{Total Assets} - \text{Total Liabilities} - \text{Goodwill}\]

Also known as: tangible assets, net tangible assets.

No programming experience? With the Finance Toolkit MCP server, AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT can calculate the Tangible Asset Value for you. Just ask in plain English.

Calculate the Tangible Asset Value in Python

The Tangible Asset Value is available in the Ratios module of the open-source Finance Toolkit. Install it with:

pip install financetoolkit -U

Then call get_tangible_asset_value as shown below.

from financetoolkit import Toolkit

toolkit = Toolkit(["AAPL", "TSLA"], api_key="FINANCIAL_MODELING_PREP_KEY")

tangible_asset_value = toolkit.ratios.get_tangible_asset_value()

Which returns:

  2021 2022 2023 2024 2025
AAPL 6.309e+10 5.0672e+10 6.2146e+10 5.695e+10 7.3733e+10
TSLA 3.1383e+10 4.5704e+10 6.3356e+10 7.3436e+10 8.2608e+10

Parameters

get_tangible_asset_value accepts the following parameters:

  • rounding (int, optional): The number of decimals to round the results to. Defaults to 4.
  • growth (bool, optional): Whether to calculate the growth of the ratios. Defaults to False.
  • lag (int | str, optional): The lag to use for the growth calculation. Defaults to 1.
  • standardize (bool, optional): Whether to standardize (Z-Score) the result. When combined with growth=True, standardizes the growth values instead of the raw values. Defaults to False.
  • trailing (int): Defines whether to select a trailing period. E.g. when selecting 4 with quarterly data, the TTM is calculated.

The Ratios module page introduces the module, and the sidebar lists all of its functions.
