Obtain the institutional ownership of each company per quarter, based on the Form 13F filings of institutional investment managers (those managing over $100 million in US equities): the number of holders and its change, the shares and value they hold, their share of the shares outstanding (Ownership) and its change, the positions opened, increased, reduced and closed, the put/call ratio of the options they report and the share of the shares outstanding held by the ten largest holders (Top 10 Ownership).

Institutional ownership shows how widely professional investors hold a company. A rising number of holders and ownership points to growing interest, while many closed and reduced positions can signal the opposite. A high Top 10 Ownership means a few holders can move the share price when they buy or sell, and crowding in a share increases the risk of forced selling (Sias, Starks and Titman, 2006; Gompers and Metrick, 2001, “Institutional Investors and Equity Prices”).

Institutional Ownership in Python or via the MCP

Install the Finance Toolkit with:

pip install financetoolkit -U

Then call get_institutional_ownership as shown below.

from financetoolkit import Toolkit

toolkit = Toolkit(
    ["AAPL"],
    api_key="FINANCIAL_MODELING_PREP_KEY",
    start_date="2025-01-01",
    end_date="2025-12-31",
)

toolkit.get_institutional_ownership(
    show_columns=["Holders", "Ownership", "Ownership Change", "New Positions", "Closed Positions", "Top 10 Ownership"]
)

Or, after setting up the Finance Toolkit MCP, ask:

How did institutional ownership of Apple change in each quarter of 2025?
